How the pieces move
- 帥General – one step orthogonally, stays inside the palace. The two Generals may never face each other on an open file.
- 仕Advisor – one step diagonally inside the palace.
- 相Elephant – exactly two points diagonally, cannot cross the river and is blocked if the middle point is occupied.
- 傌Horse – one step straight then one diagonally; blocked by a piece next to it ("hobbling the leg").
- 俥Chariot – any distance orthogonally, like a rook.
- 炮Cannon – moves like a chariot, but captures by jumping over exactly one piece.
- 兵Soldier – one step forward; after crossing the river it may also move sideways.
Win by checkmate. A side with no legal move also loses. Threefold repetition or 60 moves without a capture is a draw.
