Yeast Converter – Introduction & Formula

Introduction:

The Yeast Converter helps you convert between different types of yeast and units of measurement used in baking. Whether your recipe uses fresh yeast, active dry yeast, or instant yeast, this tool allows you to accurately convert the amount to suit your preferred yeast type and unit — such as grams, teaspoons, tablespoons, or cups.

Why use a yeast converter?

Each type of yeast has a different moisture content and potency:

  • Fresh yeast is moist and less concentrated.

  • Active dry yeast is granular and needs to be dissolved before use.

  • Instant yeast is the most concentrated and doesn’t require proofing.

If you substitute one for another without adjusting the quantity, your dough might not rise properly. This converter helps you make accurate substitutions.

Conversion Formula:

  1. Convert the input amount to grams based on the selected unit:

    • 1 teaspoon ≈ 3.03 grams

    • 1 tablespoon ≈ 9.09 grams

    • 1 cup ≈ 238 grams

  2. Convert yeast type using standard ratios (based on potency):

    • 1g fresh yeast = 0.4g active dry = 0.33g instant

    • 1g active dry = 2.5g fresh = 0.6667g instant

    • 1g instant = 3g fresh = 1.5g active dry

  3. Convert back to the desired output unit using the same weight equivalents.

Example:

To substitute 7g of active dry yeast with instant yeast:
7g × 2/3 = 4.67g of instant yeast
