Aurora Forecast Tracker – Track the Northern Lights Easily

If you love astronomy or simply want to catch the aurora borealis, the Aurora Forecast Tracker from NOAA SWPC is a must-have tool. It allows you to track and forecast auroral activity accurately and in real-time.

Features

Forecast Map
The tool shows areas where the aurora may be visible in the next 30 minutes, helping you quickly determine the best spots for aurora viewing. The map is updated automatically every 5 minutes, keeping you informed with the latest data.

  1. Kp Index – Aurora Activity Level
The Kp Index measures auroral activity on a scale from 0 to 9:

    • Kp ≥ 5: Aurora may be visible at high latitudes.

    • The tool provides 3-day Kp forecasts, allowing you to plan ahead.
For example, NOAA’s forecast for Nov 17-19, 2025, shows a peak Kp of 4.67 (G1 – minor geomagnetic storm), enough for aurora visibility in northern regions.

  2. Check Your Location
You can check if your current location has aurora viewing potential. With location access, the map automatically pinpoints your area and shows the probability of seeing the aurora.

  3. Additional NOAA Data

    • Solar Radiation Activity: Forecasts minor or greater solar storms (S1+).

    • Radio Blackouts: Forecasts R1-R3 levels that may affect radio signals.
All information is continuously updated, so you not only track auroras but also stay informed about space weather conditions.

Quick Guide to Use

  1. Allow location access for accurate forecasts.

  2. Check the 30-minute forecast map and Kp Index.

  3. Plan your aurora viewing if Kp ≥ 5 and weather conditions are favorable.
